What a sticker file needs

A good sticker file has two parts: the artwork that gets printed and the outline that the cutter follows. The outline is often called a cut contour. Both are easier to produce from a vector because the edges are exact shapes rather than blurry pixels. Vetorly turns a PNG or JPG into shapes with smooth Bézier curves and few nodes, with each color as a separate editable shape, so you get clean artwork to start from.

Artwork that works as a sticker

Bold mascots, badges, lettering and flat illustrations make strong stickers. Fine hairlines, tiny disconnected specks and very detailed textures are harder to cut around and may not hold up in use.

Preparing the image

  • Use the largest copy available.
  • Remove drop shadows if the sticker will have its own border or outline.
  • Keep gaps between parts wide enough to remain visible once printed.
  • Decide whether the sticker is a single die-cut shape or has separate pieces.

Build the cut line

  1. Open the downloaded vector in your design software.
  2. Select all shapes and create an outline around them with a small offset, so the cut sits slightly outside the artwork.
  3. Smooth the outline and remove tiny notches that make the cutter jerk.
  4. Put the cut path on its own layer. Many print shops ask for it as a spot color with a specific name, so check their file guide.
  5. Add bleed to the artwork so no white edge shows if the cut is slightly off.

Print and cut considerations

Printed colors can look different from screen colors, so confirm the color mode with your supplier. If you are using a craft cutter with a print-then-cut feature, registration marks matter and the machine needs a clean outline. For plain cut vinyl without printing, separate color shapes can be cut from different vinyl colors and layered.

After conversion

Check small details, thin connections and any shape that is only a few pixels wide. Remove stray specks that would create odd cuts. If you are making cut files for a hobby machine, read turning an image into a cut file or see SVG for Cricut. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Vetorly create the cut contour line for me?

It gives you clean artwork shapes. You then create the outline offset and name the cut path in your design software or according to your print shop guidelines.

Which file formats can I send to a sticker printer?

PDF, EPS and SVG are commonly accepted. One credit gives you all of them, so check your printer and send what they prefer.

Can I make stickers from a photo?

Photos become stylized flat shapes in a vector. Bold artwork and logos work best for stickers.

Do I get separate color shapes?

Yes. Each color is an editable shape, useful for layered vinyl or for adjusting colors before printing.

Is the preview really free?

Yes. Upload and see the result for free. You only pay to download the clean file.

Which formats do I get?

SVG, PDF, EPS, DXF and high-res PNG. One credit unlocks every format of that image.

Does it work in Illustrator and CorelDRAW?

Yes. Open the SVG, EPS or PDF. Inkscape and Affinity work too.

Cricut, Silhouette and cutting plotters?

Yes. Use the SVG (or DXF in Silhouette Studio). Shapes come separated by color.

Laser and CNC?

Yes. Download DXF or SVG for LightBurn, Glowforge, RDWorks and CNC software.

Which images work best?

Logos, icons, illustrations, drawings and art with clear shapes. Photos work too, with a more artistic look.
