Which file does your Silhouette setup accept
Silhouette machines are driven by Silhouette Studio, and the file formats it can open depend on the version you have. Historically, opening SVG files has required an upgraded edition of the software, while DXF has been available more widely. Rules can change, so check your own version. The good news is that one Vetorly credit gives you both SVG and DXF, along with PDF, EPS and PNG, so you do not need to guess in advance.
Why a vector helps
A PNG or JPG is only a picture. Silhouette's own trace tool can outline a picture, but results depend heavily on the image. Vetorly rebuilds the image as shapes with smooth Bézier curves and few nodes, with each color as a separate editable shape, so your cut paths are already defined.
Prepare your artwork
- Use bold shapes. Delicate hairlines and tiny details are hard to cut and weed.
- Choose high contrast, such as dark art on a light plain background.
- Limit colors if you will cut each in a different material.
- Remove drop shadows and textures.
Importing and checking
- Open or import the downloaded SVG or DXF in Silhouette Studio.
- Resize the design to the target dimensions before cutting.
- Delete any background shape.
- Check cut lines visually using the software's cut-line display, and look for stray shapes.
- If shapes overlap, decide whether to weld them or keep them as separate layers of material.
- Do a test cut on scrap with the right blade depth and force for your material.
DXF or SVG
SVG usually keeps shapes grouped in a way that is convenient for color layering. DXF is basic geometry and may arrive as one set of lines, so you color or separate pieces yourself in the software. Try SVG first if your edition supports it and use DXF as the fallback.
Typical problems
Inner shapes such as the centers of letters can disappear if the source is blurry, and thin bridging lines can break when cutting delicate materials. Fix these in the source or in the vector before cutting. For a deeper walkthrough across machines, read turning an image into a cut file. Cricut owner? See SVG for Cricut.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can Silhouette Studio open SVG files?
SVG import has historically required an upgraded edition of Silhouette Studio, so check your version. DXF is another option, and one credit gives you both.
Which is better for Silhouette, SVG or DXF?
SVG usually keeps color shapes grouped, while DXF is basic line geometry. Use SVG if your software supports it and DXF as a fallback.
Do I need to trace the image in Silhouette Studio afterward?
No. The downloaded file is already made of vector shapes, so you can resize and cut it directly after checking the cut lines.
Is there a subscription?
No. You pay per image with credits that never expire.
Is the preview really free?
Yes. Upload and see the result for free. You only pay to download the clean file.
Which formats do I get?
SVG, PDF, EPS, DXF and high-res PNG. One credit unlocks every format of that image.
Does it work in Illustrator and CorelDRAW?
Yes. Open the SVG, EPS or PDF. Inkscape and Affinity work too.
Cricut, Silhouette and cutting plotters?
Yes. Use the SVG (or DXF in Silhouette Studio). Shapes come separated by color.
Laser and CNC?
Yes. Download DXF or SVG for LightBurn, Glowforge, RDWorks and CNC software.
Which images work best?
Logos, icons, illustrations, drawings and art with clear shapes. Photos work too, with a more artistic look.
